I have been very inspired to be Wild at Heart and to have a Purpose-Driven Life and am a huge fan of those culture impacting books. I am even more excited by 48 Days to the Work You Love because it puts clothes on the concepts.” - Dave Ramsey.
Dan believes in focused living and the importance of personal and corporate Mission Statements. He believes that a clear sense of direction can help us become all that God designed us to be. His unique clarification of how God gifts us will introduce you to a new sense of freedom and fulfillment of your life’s calling. As Dave Ramsey, states above, Dan Miller’s 48 Days to the Work You Love not only provides a wealth of mind altering information regarding our work, but also delivers methods to realize the vocation that God made you for.
In the Christian and secular market alike, much attention is given to finances and the job market, but little to no resources are offered that pertain to “what is my calling?” Most people spend the majority of their time at work, and doing so for a paycheck alone is not cutting it anymore.
That’s what makes this book a “book of the times.” This is what people need. Clarity on what work is supposed to be, as God intended it. Then also, clarity on what each of us was created to do.
“Our calling is a mix of our skills, abilities and passions,” says Miller. “Most people just end up working at something in their 30s and 40s, that they fell into in their early 20s. Or they just looked at a job opportunity that pays well. That’s what our society advocates…working for the biggest paycheck.
But no one is going to make much, or last too long with any joy in their life, if they are spending all their time doing something that’s not fulfilling. And it’s not rocket science to deduce how God wired you, and what career opportunities are a relevant fit.”
Over a decade of personal Career/Life coaching that produced scores of life changing testimonials has gone into 48 Days to the Work You Love, as well as Miller’s other products, which include workbooks and CDs, all available at his website at 48days.com. A weekly ezine that started with 67 people years ago, is now nearing 40,000 subscribers and has become the source for America’s career pulse and Dan’s coaching commentary.
Maybe you say: “But I Need Money Now”!
Use your time wisely and you’ll see results that will change your bank account in 90 days.
Last night, I talked with a gentleman who has been a real estate appraiser for 15 years. As everyone knows, the real estate market has slowed down, thus his income has dropped dramatically. He told me he wanted to switch to a “residual” income - lots of it - and fast.
This is a great time to develop a residual income idea (one where it’s not just an exchange of time for a paycheck - but where income continues even while you’re on the beach). In the last week, I’ve talked to people who are baking “better than crack” chocolate pies, writing great country songs, developing continuing education courses for pharmacists, producing a gardening video, writing a book on spiritual growth, and developing a workshop for people transitioning out of church staff positions.
All of these are ideas I love and all have great financial potential. BUT, none of them will produce “lots of income fast.” All of these will need an 18-24 month ramp-up time, even with a clear plan of action.
That’s where most people abandon their best ideas. The desire for making money fast will always push you down on the scale of financial opportunity. If you need money quickly go get a job at McDonalds today and get your paycheck on Friday for your $8.00 an hour contribution. But you can’t start writing today and get a $300,000 advance for your book on Friday. That requires lots of time invested with no short-term financial return.
I understand if you need money quickly; just don’t think you have to make an “either/or” decision. Make an “and” decision. Take the job at Home Depot today AND start writing that book proposal tonight. Two years from now you’ll be ready to step into a higher level of success than most people ever experience. Making a decision to address your immediate need does not need to shut the door on your long-term ultimate dream work.
Many people sit in a college classroom for four years with little focus and exit poorly equipped for any success. If you spend only 4-5 hours a week for a 4-year period with determination and a clear focus you will absolutely put yourself into an elite group of high achievers. The November/December issue of the Futurist magazine says the average American spends 2.6 hours per day surfing channels on television. Take that time, use it wisely, and you’ll see results that will change your bank account in 90 days.
